Reference News Network reported on July 3 that US media said that United Parcel Service (UPS) delivers nearly 5 billion packages every year, using transportation methods including large jets, hybrid trucks, and sometimes drones. But in one of its home states, Kentucky, the adoption of golf carts, a less-cool form of transportation, struck a nerve with drivers.
According to a report on the Wall Street Journal website on June 30, as Kentucky passed a new law allowing delivery drivers to use golf carts on the road, UPS can use this vehicle to deliver packages in the state. The company plans to supplement its fleet of brown delivery trucks with converted golf carts primarily during the winter holiday season, when daily deliveries can be two-thirds above normal levels.
But union leaders who opposed the rule argued that allowing golf carts to share the roads with cars and trucks would put workers at risk. They also objected to the fact that UPS golf cart drivers are paid less than regular truck drivers.
UPS spokesman Glenn Zakara said these golf carts have been significantly modified compared to those used on fairways. The carts can be enclosed, have a heated interior, turn signals, seat belts and a badge identifying them as a low-speed vehicle.
The golf cart converts into a flatbed trailer, or tows a package trailer on the back, and will be driven by a part-time driver. Golf carts generally have a speed limit of 24 kilometers per hour and are only allowed in residential areas and on roads with a speed limit of 56 kilometers per hour.
Zakara said using the golf carts will give UPS more flexibility during the holidays without having to buy new delivery trucks or vans. UPS said this electric golf cart can travel 40 to 64 kilometers on a single charge.
It can be seen that golf carts can not only be used in golf courses, scenic spots, resorts, hotels, etc., but there are many more possibilities.
